The Casual Vacancy – #23

Part Six – Weaknesses of Voluntary Bodies

Still not too sure on the relevance of each of these extracts of the Local Council Administration, I guess without knowing what is coming it is hard to see why they are involved, but even understanding why the extracts were included for some of the past parts has been challenging. I think once I have read everything I will go back and try to figure out the reasoning behind each of these extracts and their inclusion.

Speaking of finishing The Casual Vacancy, this is the penultimate section of the book, and I presume that this and the next one will be completed in one post each, so on the 10th of November this will be finished, and for the next day or two will be analysis and opinion.

I

  • Well Colin Wall’s imaginings of the police coming to his door have come true, but they are looking for Fats, where has he gone? Or do they want to question him about Robbie’s death
  • Wow, they know Fats was there. Are they charging him with negligence?
  • So when the police arrived at the river, Fats ran away, is he gone forever?
  • At least Colin isn’t breaking down, he is actually prepared for such a calamity
  • Andrew won’t know where he is, they aren’t friends any more
  • Um Andrew, this is more serious than your now failed friendship
  • Good boy, tell him the secret hiding spot
  • Tessa you don’t know where you are looking so just be quiet
  • Where is Krystal?
  • Kay, you need to help the Weedon’s, who cares about not being their social worker, this is more important
  • So he was crying?
  • Has he finally seen how life really is and not this inauthentic crap?
  • At least he feels bad about it, better than him not feeling anything

II

  • Sukhvinder should you really hate the man who saved your life? Or was your intention to die?
  • See will need a tetanus shot
  • Hopefully Parminder doesn’t blame Sukhvinder and shows her love instead of ridicule
  • Maybe this will bring everyone together, tragedy has a way of doing that
  • Does Krystal know? What about Terri?
  • OH, Sukhvinder’s arms!
  • I guess that was always going to come out, but Parminder listen to Vikram and give her space
  • It was a bit rich that they wanted Parminder to help in their time of need, but her refusal has probably made them hate her even more
  • At least Parminder and Vikram are now concentrating on Sukhvinder
  • Seriously Miles get over it
  • That would be a smart thing, get rid of the site. But of course you would only do it after it ruined YOUR life
  • I wonder if Howard did see what Shirley was doing
  • So the story starts with death and ends with it too?
  • Poor Robbie!

III

  • At least Tessa and Fats have a chance to talk
  • It’s more than okay to cry Fats
  • Ashamed? You wanted Fats to die? What?
  • I understand Tessa’s reaction, they left a 4/5 year old alone, that is something you CANNOT do, especially not outside. And Fats you wanted to refuse, but you didn’t. How inauthentic is that?
  • I wonder if he did get Krystal pregnant? And it doesn’t look like they would be ready for it anyway
  • We finally get to hear Fats’ story
  • His mother was 14 years old, and she was ‘middle class’
  • They have no idea who the father was, she refused to say
  • Sadly this means he could have been the result of incest
  • Colin didn’t want him, because he didn’t think he was well enough to look after a baby, and that’s fair enough, looking after a child is a big responsibility
  • Tessa wanted him so much that she made Colin lie about his condition
  • OH MY! On the 5th night they had him, Colin went into the car and tried to kill himself with the exhaust!
  • WOW, he was so convinced that he would somehow kill Fats, that he decided to kill himself. That does put Colin in a whole new light
  • So Colin doesn’t love Fats? That’s a lie?
  • You almost should have taken him to the Fields and made him tell Terri, though Terri deserves to hear from someone better than him
  • Where is Krystal?

IV

  • Poor Krystal!
  • Who cares about Fats
  • Terri, this is not about the drugs
  • How can Krystal live now? Knowing she bascially killed her brother? I guess a cruel twist will be that she is pregnant
  • To be honest I don’t care about Gaia and Kay’s fighting
  • What will Kay do?
  • You should be ashamed Gaia
  • Seriously Gaia you are being way too selfish, you just don’t like Pagford, that’s it. Krystal and Terri have lost Robbie
  • Seriously will nobody try to comfort Terri? That’s why Kay needs to go
  • Well Gaia you aren’t wrong
  • Wait! Krystal what are you doing? Don’t start taking drugs!
  • Cheryl is there too now
  • Seriously NO KRYSTAL!
  • NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
  • Hopefully there is not enough time
  • Seriously Krystal don’t, please
  • She’s gone
  • She has overdosed, that’s it
  • This is so full of death, will Howard die too?
  • What is Terri going to do? Will she die too?
  • KRYSTAL!
  • Did not see any of this coming!

The Casual Vacancy – #22

Just quickly, this blog is not political, and I don’t want to tell you who to vote for. Of course the US Presidential Election is tomorrow/today and I would encourage every American reading this to go out there and vote, for whoever they want. Where I live, voting is compulsory so I don’t really get this voluntary voting thing, and I would never imagine NOT voting if I had the choice. So if you can, go out there and vote! Thank you! And back to the Casual Vacancy

IX

  • What’s your plan Krystal? Have unprotected sex with Fats? And then what?
  • Would they actually give her a house because she was pregnant? Even though she isn’t an adult?
  • Are you sure Fats’ parents will actually give you money?
  • So that’s how you treat ‘a friend’? You don’t even want to see Andrew anymore. Was he ever your friend?
  • Well Krystal, having Robbie has made Fats very reluctant to have a baby with you
  • Why did you want to stay up all night? Was it to prove something? Fats, I think it is you who is the joke
  • Either coins in England are worth a lot, and Fats gave a lot of change, or food is REALLY cheap
  • Krystal what do you think you’ll be doing with Robbie while you too have sex?
  • So you knew Fats that Andrew liked Gaia, and yet you kissed her anyway? THAT is inauthentic
  • Kay didn’t mean to leave you
  • Maybe you should go and see Kay, she was the best woman to help you, silly Mattie
  • Seriously, Fats doesn’t want to have sex with Robbie around, and I can’t blame him
  • Hated the idea of what she was suggesting, yes, but how is that inauthentic? That makes NO sense!
  • So authenticity is what Cubby wouldn’t do, and what Dane Tully or Pikey Pritchard would do? I don’t think you should base your life choices on what two delinquents do
  • Hopefully Fats does become difficult and makes sure that Krystal doesn’t get pregnant.

X

  • Are you still trying to stalk Mary, Gavin?
  • Seriously Gavin! Mary doesn’t like you (as far as I know) and she was your best friend’s wife!
  • Casually walking past Robbie!
  • Gavin, I think Mary doesn’t need your ‘care’ any more
  • Leave Mary! Get as far away from Gavin as possible
  • Yep Miles won, Bellchapel will be closed, and the Fields will be Yarvils problem
  • Interesting that Mary is quite happy that everything Barry was fighting for is now crumbling
  • Mary you are being so harsh on Krystal and you don’t even know what she goes through, but I guess that is what all of us are like
  • Actually Mary most people really do just need someone who cares. Barry and Kay together would have done wonders for the Weedons, it’s just about finding the right fit
  • Who exactly needs help other than the people that you are pushing away? Yes everyone has issues, but why should your issues be more important than ‘theirs’?
  • Gavin tread carefully!
  • Mary watch out!
  • Oh dear Gavin, you’ve admitted it. Probably the first time you’ve actually told someone how you feel about them!
  • Mary doesn’t like you back
  • You can’t take something like that back. Ever.
  • Hmm Barry always suspected Gavin liked Mary
  • Mary don’t be polite. You don’t like him, and he’s made it too awkward

XI

  • Howard the only reason you feel unwell, is guilt
  • Liar!
  • People can be very sneaky and hide things from you, but usually you should be able to tell, unless you don’t pay attention
  • Awkward, Lexie has come over so Sam and Miles can work things out, and yet Shirley and Howard need time to work things out too
  • What would Howard say to Maureen though? That they were found out? That she should lie? Or just be prepared?
  • Strange how one piece of information changes everything
  • Of course Gaia didn’t show, probably had a nasty hangover. And Sukhvinder well where is she?
  • I don’t think it is you Shirley that people would despise, it should be Howard. HE was the one who cheated on you, not you! Even though I dislike her, the fact that Shirley would be attacked or hated because her husband cheated on her, is just wrong
  • I wonder how many people saw the post? Did anyone?
  • Awkward for Andrew!
  • At least Andrew has a defense
  • What are you doing Shirley?

XII

  • Oh dear, Robbie, stay put, we don’t want things to happen to you, or for you to see or hear something you shouldn’t
  • Krystal you should have thought of this
  • Gavin is coming back
  • Well Gavin you’ve lost Kay, so you’ll just have to deal with your misery by yourself
  • Robbie is about to run off, and what will Krystal do?
  • Is Sam going to do something about this four/five year old wandering around by himself?
  • Where did Krystal go?
  • Are you really going to ignore a screaming young child Shirley?
  • Are you going to try and kill Howard? With the epiPen? What do you think you are doing?
  • Krystal is still there, but I guess Robbie has just gotten confused

XIII

  • Everyone seems to be out and about today!
  • Building society pass book? What is that? And what is it used for?
  • Oh, of course, Sukhvinder feels so betrayed by Gaia! How did I not realise this!
  • How could Gaia do that! She starts out attacking Sukhvinder’s bully and then kisses him!
  • It is a real pity that Sukhvinder doesn’t know the whole story, and that Gaia doesn’t like Fats (I think he was just a rebound after Marco)
  • Does Gaia even remember?
  • What are you going to do Sukhviner? Where are you going?
  • Krystal has finally noticed that Robbie isn’t where he was supposed to
  • HOLY SHIT! He’s in the river!
  • Sukhviner just jumped in!
  • She’s going to be a hero? As long as she doesn’t get dragged under too

XIV

  • Where is Howard?
  • Shirley? Justice? You are going to give him adrenaline? And then what? You will be caught and be sent to jail!
  • People really don’t seem to think things through…
  • WHAT! Howard is dead?
  • Well he is close to it! Is Shirley going to save him
  • Um Shirley, you haven’t done anything! Ring the ambulance!
  • Orrbank Cottage? What?
  • Wouldn’t adrenaline save him?

XV

  • Good to see that Miles goes to Parminder even though they hate each other
  • Parminder you have to!
  • You have to go, even if you are suspended you can save his life, and then he will drop the case
  • Oh is the ambulance for Sukhvinder?
  • Did you save him?
  • Nope, Sukhvinder had to be saved by someone else
  • NO! Robbie’s DEAD!
  • Is the ambulance coming for both things? It better!
  • NO JOKE! So much has happened!

So Robbie is dead? Howard nearly died! Krystal could be pregnant! Sukhvinder was close to dying too, and tried to save Robbie. Shirley was trying to kill Howard, but didn’t need to do anything since he was nearly dead. Maureen is oblivious to what is going on, which she would hate. Sam and Miles are in troubled times. Gavin is alone. Mary feels awkward because of Gavin. Andrew feels awkward because of Sam. Gaia knows nothing and probably made Sukhvinder so keen to save Robbie. Terri doesn’t know about her son being dead. Is Krystal with Robbie? What is Fats doing? Is he thinking about the authenticity? Parminder didn’t try to help Howard, even though I’m sure she could of. And if she did help, wouldn’t that have made them grateful? And Simon, Colin, Terri, Kay, Ruth and Vikram are all absent. So much interconnection! What on earth is going to happen next, and tie off everything?

The Casual Vacancy – #13

VIII

  • Oooh, Colin has seen Gavin and Mary, he thinks that maybe Mary is having some sort of scandalous affair (well, thinks Mary has moved on a tad too quickly)
  • Gavin isn’t single Colin, but it just shows how much he hides Kay, and denies her existance
  • No Colin, they aren’t having some sort of an affair, he is just being ‘gentlemanly’ and walking her home
  • Tessa doesn’t want you to be Councillor because …? Well I’m not too sure. Is it because she knows you’d be terrible and never replace Barry? Or doesn’t want you trying to run Pagford? Not really too sure
  • Calm down Colin, I can almost see why Fats is the way he is with a father like Colin
  • You might win the election, but Simon has thrown a spanner into the works
  • See, Tessa has all the answers
  • You are bringing this on yourself Colin! Sounds like a theme, and in real life we bring a lot on ourselves too, in a way like karma, but also our minds make things more difficult than they need to be
  • Colin was jealous of Barry’s having other friends? That’s weird. Were they maybe more than friends, well there was certainly something that went on that we don’t know about
  • Poor, naive Colin, can’t you see that Mary hates you and doesn’t want you anywhere near her, and she certainly doesn’t want you asking if Barry would approve your ideas (be your own man Colin, don’t try to be Barry!
  • Mary is not Barry, and why are you so loyal to him?

IX

  • Is this Andrew’s first day of work (No, it isn’t)
  • Simon, a complete control freak
  • Code, for what? Is this for his revenge?
  • Well he is actually seeing Fats, so he wasn’t lying about that, but I didn’t think he was going to tell Fats about his plan
  • Can you really be that made at 6 year olds?
  • You made Fats pee himself!
  • Don’t threaten them they are only 6 years old, jeez
  • Go Tessa! You show Simon how to be furious without raising your voice of becoming violent, quite a skill
  • Phew, thought they said Simon was a lesbian, that was a strange moment
  • Even Andrew misheard, and thought they were talking about Tessa!
  • Sukhvinder? You cannot make assumptions like that, and who cares? It’s not like you want to get with Sukhvinder so why does it matter she isn’t attracted to men, if that is the case?
  • Simon is doing better than Colin to prepare for the election. Plus he knows people?
  • Don’t be disrespectful Fats, swearing, sexism and crude language might be acceptable for you, but others don’t want to hear it
  • Hmm what is Andrew going to do? Send emails under Simon’s name? Use his bank account? Expose his child abuse?
  • What will Simon do if he loses, he would definitely blame Andrew somehow
  • Smart Andrew, who knows what Simon would do to find out if you were involved, and you aren’t ignorant about what traces you leave when you go online
  • SQL injections? What? Yes, I just googled it, but it makes no sense to me. But I can tell that this teacher should not have mentioned it!
  • It worked, but I guess since it is such an amateurish website, the ‘simplest’ of ‘hacks’ would crack it
  • Now he has Barry’s user details, his password, and his profile. I have no idea how he did that!
  • Interesting post, exposing Barry’s dodgy dealings with stolen goods and using the print works at his work without permission, but wouldn’t he immediately think that you have blabbed? How could you keep a straight face, even if you could, he wouldn’t believe that you didn’t do it?
  • Now are you actually going to do it with Fats on your case? Well now he wants to use it to expose Colin!
  • Clever to change the username!
  • Now, let’s wait to see the carnage!

X

  • Andrew went back home, but we stay with Fats as he remains in town “on a whim”, but really he is meeting Krystal
  • Does this mean we are going to have a real sex scene in this book? Even though this was clearly promoted as an ‘adult’ book, I didn’t expect this
  • Bit jealous of Andrew coming up with something clever? And without your help?
  • Not this ‘authentic’ stuff again! It makes so little sense
  • Sure not ‘conforming’ can be a good thing, but being an individual just for the sake of not conforming is almost sad
  • You clearly don’t know what life is like with Simon, but you just want to look for fights
  • Good to see that Fats remembers when Simon nearly killed him (well if he didn’t restrain, he could have done some serious damage)
  • Giving up words? But words are everything, sure empty words with no real meaning and not followed by action are pointless, but words do so much
  • JK Rowling really does like to put the accents into the spellings of words. I love it, yet loathe it. Yes it makes you read it the way it would be said, instead of just saying this character had a strong ….. accent, but it also gets really annoying trying to read it
  • Even Dane Tully seems to know that smoking is bad!
  • Nothing more romantic than having a shag in public on some grass…
  • A school celebrity?
  • I don’t understand gangs. Sorry, I really don’t. Sure it gives people a sense of community that they wouldn’t usually get, and it makes them feel like they belong. But do you really have to bash people up and cause trouble, just because you are ‘bored’? Don’t really get it
  • Krystal has gone to see Nana Cath, probably not the thing Fats wants to hear, but so be it
  • Krystal has done the interview! Good job! Though the journalist wasn’t as helpful as they could have been, and it would have been much better with Barry, but it was good enough
  • Pte Samuel Weedon, Krystal’s great-grandfather, went to the same school as her, I guess families have really got long roots in Pagford
  • Krystal does like school, no matter what other people might think
  • But kids are mean and nasty, it is really awful actually. And it is ‘good’ to see that Krystal, even someone who is seen to be aggressive and a trouble maker, is still affected by what other’s say about her. It goes to show that everyone is affected by hurtful words, and that everyone wants to belong
  • Who needs rotten people like Lexie Mollison!
  • Spliffs? Never heard that name for them (I guess marijuana)
  • Wagging school again Fats?
  • Good question. Why? Why does anyone do anything, especially something so violent?
  • Do you want to be glassed Fats? I think you might need some psychological help
  • Carrying around knives/blades, that will surely only lead to good things… Right? Seriously someone is going to get badly hurt or even die when there are knives about
  • Realities of life? We don’t need violence
  • Having sex in a cemetery? Really?
  • It would be weird not knowing your brother and sisters and not seeing them, I can’t imagine what that is like, really I can’t imagine what Krystal’s life is at all like
  • You want a child Krystal?
  • So Fats is adopted? Is Barry his father?
  • Sorry Krystal but I want to hear from Fats, not you, even though your story is interesting too
  • Ritchie Adams does sound psychotic, cannot imagine at all what that would be like
  • Woah, JK Rowling did that on purpose didn’t she. She made us think Krystal meant Barry Fairbrother, not Barry Coates
  • Do you really fantasise about having a dad who is in prison, and who has killed people, something is not right with you at all Fats!
  • Fats was a premature baby, and his mother had him young, but where does Barry fit in?
  • Well that was weird
  • Maybe if you didn’t take drugs getting home would be easier?
  • Oh, of course this would happen, Barry’s grave
  • You can’t change the past Krystal, no matter how hard you try
  • How is that a funny story at all? You are very strange Fats, and not in a good way

Well that is Part Two complete, next time we logically move on to Part Three. I’m guessing the election won’t be for a while yet, and next we will be seeing the fallout from Andrew’s post and also from Krystal’s interview. And we will see Andrew’s first day at work, and the three candidates trying to win votes. Apart from that, I have no idea what is coming.

The Casual Vacancy – #7

My seventh post about The Casual Vacancy!

IV

  • Tessa finally seeing Parminder
  • Oh Mrs Weedon, Krystal’s greatgrandmother
  • They may be lies, but don’t we wish they were true
  • Mrs Weedon’s not too happy with Parminder, she has emphysema, but is still smoking, and is blaming Parminder for stomach problems. Plus she is a racist, just because Parminder isn’t ‘white’ doesn’t mean she is a bad doctor
  • Good to see the two release their emotions
  • Why does Colin like Parminder so much? And vice versa?
  • Parminder sounds like a great doctor, who is doing her job properly, and controlling the drugs she gives out
  • Howard’s already trying to get Miles in without an election, hopefully he won’t get the support he needs
  • Good luck getting Fats into a suit
  • What’s wrong with Tessa. High blood pressure. Glucose monitoring?

V

  • Brown-nosing, not a very pleasant image (which is exactly why I brought it up for you to consider…)
  • Maybe you just love your job and don’t want to leave, or actually have work stuff to do before you go home?
  • But before Simon could go home, he needed to collect his drugs or whatever it was he bought, so the two of them went off to the Fields (of course if it is drugs, it would be in the Fields)
  • Oh, it isn’t drugs. It is the stolen computers that Terri was housing in her home, and he is getting one, and Ruth thought that he was buying one, when he is just buying a stolen one
  • Would they have CCTV on the estate? Or is he just being paranoid?
  • Is the forklift driver, that Obbo, or is it just another guy who knew about the stolen computers?
  • I bet he isn’t going the otherway he just doesn’t want to give the guy a lift
  • Driving quickly doesn’t make your number plate harder to see…
  • Simon doesn’t like seeing his wife excited, because she ‘doesn’t understand the risks’ well if you bought things legitimately then there would be no risk!
  • Do you need an instruction manual for setting up a computer?
  • Gaia had said ‘Hi’ to Andrew! But he seems to have no knowledge of girls, I’m surprised he hasn’t google some of that stuff (though that is a dangerous thing to do…)
  • Don’t they teach that stuff in schools over in the UK?
  • His jealousy of Marco and Gaia is somewhat endearing
  • That would be plain annoying having a parent come in to investigate what you were doing, you might not be doing anything ‘wrong’ but having to explain what you were doing would be so frustrating
  • Simon is very invasive of privacy and very controlling
  • I have to admit that Simon standing for Council is a strange thought
  • Can’t Simon just drop the subject like a normal person, and accept that Andrew says he doesn’t have a problem, or does he just like confrontation too much
  • Is finding a job in a small town even that easy?
  • Oh, Ruth was asking Shirley if on the website there would be instructions on how to put your name forward for nomination, but I’m guessing Ruth won’t want them on there anymore to stop competition.
  • Simon fiddled with the electricity meter? Is he that desperate? I could understand if they were living in challenging situations, but he just seems like he doesn’t want to pay what he has to, and will do whatever he can to save a buck, even if it means breaking the law. There are legal ways of reducing your bills!
  • Oh, so Ruth likes that Simon would ‘choose’ her as ‘worthy’, it is quite sad really
  • So Simon makes Ruth’s anxieties even worse by making up a story which would set her off to thinking of the police coming knocking to their home? Sick!
  • And then threatens everyone to keep their mouths shut about the computer, I wonder if Ruth feels bad for telling Shirley they were getting one
  • Address your children with their names and not ‘You’
  • Calling your child a ‘pussy’, really, you are the weakling, picking on your own children
  • So you want to do it yourself, don’t scream at someone trying to help you! He is infuriating me, and I’m not even there!
  • Ruth came to watch them, and Andrew could tell, she wanted it not to work, so it would be gone, but I doubt that would be the end of it, he would demand it to be fixed, and blame Andrew
  • Wow, he really is getting worked up about not being able to work the computer, it is almost comical how frustrated he is getting, but then he just takes it out on his children, calling your son, ‘Pauline’ as a joke, what are you? And how old are you, I expect that from a sadistic 5 year old!
  • Yes Simon, that inanimate object is just out to get you
  • Thankfully the computer works, so Simon doesn’t explode and attack his children
  • I am reminded of how annoying and infuriating Umbridge is in Harry Potter
  • At least the computer works. But Simon has no idea what he is doing
  • Does Simon not like socialising? Why? Is it because he knows he is inferior to other people and wants to control the only people he can, but if he socialises he will be ridiculed for being moronic?
  • Simon would not be a good politician!
